When is a Maltipoo a Puppy?

Maltipoo puppies are just that until 1 year old. The age classification is as such:

Milestones

Maltipoo puppies are very rounded, they have some “puppy fat” and it does help to create that snuggly appearance. They start out with their puppy coat, which is most often soft and fluffy. As they mature, they will lose a little thickness and the puppy coat will be covered by their adult coat. When the genetic influence favors the Poodle, the puppy’s coat tends to be curly. If the Maltese side is stronger, the Maltipoo usually develops a soft, silky coat with a slight wave.

Puppies grow quickly, and here are some key stages to notice:

Birth to 3 weeks: Their eyes remain closed, and their hearing has not yet developed. He comes into the world toothless. All his time at this stage is devoted to nursing and sleeping.

3 weeks old: Pup is now able to hear and eyes have opened. This is when a puppy initially attempts to walk. It is absolutely normal for Maltipoo puppies to stumble and stagger. They must learn to stretch out their muscles and get their bearings. Plenty of sleeping needs to be done at this young age, and some will sleep 18-20 hours per day. But soon enough, you will wish that he or she napped even more!

4 to 5 weeks old: They are fully hearing, fully seeing and walking quite well by now. Weaning to solids from liquids has started. At this stage, they are acquiring behavior from the dam and the littermates, especially the biting action.

When the littermates roll around with one another, they bite and wrestle. When they bite too hard, the other dog will yelp very loud and typically ignore the perpetrator for a while. This prohibits the young one from doing it so forcefully. They’re still weaned at this stage, but they’re nearly ready to be more on their own.

6 weeks: Milk teeth are now completely erupted in most. Relish this time, before long they will be losing them and teething. The 6 week old puppy is on solid food and being away from the dam a great deal more. He’s rambunctious and having the time of his life discovering his world.

8 weeks old: The 8 week old Maltipoo puppy is de-wormed and has received the 1st round of puppy vaccinations. He is active, hyper, curious. He is weaned from the dam and available to go to a new, loving home.

A Maltipoo (also referred to as Maltepoo, Malti-poo, and Maltidoodle) or miniature Maltipoo is a cross between a miniature Poodle (or toy Poodle) and a pure Maltese.
